1963 Chrysler Turbine XP Model Car. 1:64

The Chrysler Turbine Car is an experimental two-door turbine-powered coupe produced by the Chrysler Corporation from 1963 to 1964. Styled by Chrysler design chief Elwood Engel, the car was powered by an Chrysler A831 turbine engine, mated to a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic. Assembly of the car was mostly done in Turin, Italy by Carrozzeria Ghia; final assembly was completed in Detroit by Chrysler. The car was part of a user experience program involving 203 drivers in 133 cities across the United States, conducted from October 1963 to January 1966; the program determined that the car's turbine engines were durable, smooth and easy to maintain, although the cars were noisy, had somewhat poor fuel economy, slow and were complex to start up. Following the program, Chrysler reclaimed the cars and destroyed all but nine; Chrysler kept two cars, six are in museums and one is owned by comedian Jay Leno. 55 cars were produced.
